New Fallen Snow at Lynx Lake – Prescott, AZ
Have you ever experienced those winter mornings where everything is pristine? On a whim, my wife suggested a quick trip over to Lynx Lake to check out the winter snow from the day and night before. It was bitterly cold, our car thermometer read 17 degrees. We bundled up ourselves and ventured out in the powdery snow. Ice rimmed the edges of the lake, ducks called and splashed in the water (is the water warmer than the snow? I guess so). I was really digging the early morning sunlight, creating wonderful contrasts of cool shadows and warm background trees. My son loved the new experience of walking in snow, much to our delight.
The driveway to Lynx Lake was covered in snow, marked only by one other set of car treads. Our all wheel drive car performed as advertised. These kind of mornings are especially inspiring to my artistic sensibilities. I see paintings everywhere, and I am frantically snapping photos wanting to capture ideas for studio paintings. Imagine trying to paint in this cold. I think the paint would be like concrete setting up.
This little cove provided wonderful shadows. And, as the sun warmed things up a tad, mist started to raise off the lake.
The morning light on the snow also created a crystal-like appearance, giving us a little show as it sparkled.
Wow, the strength of color to give a mood. Can’t you feel the coldness?
At the Lakes inlet, where the water has been low for some time, trees were taking root. For this morning, these trees were frozen popsicles poking out of the ice in abstract forms.
The lesson learned today: spontaneity plus winter weather makes for wonderful surprises. This is Arizona, folks. We get all kinds of awesome-ness.
