You are invited to the 15th Annual Grand Canyon Celebration of Art at the Grand Canyon National Park! This will be my first year participating in this premier event at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. An image of the event schedule is below and more information can be found on the website: https://www.grandcanyon.org/events/celebration-of-art/.
The Grand Canyon is a special place for me! I went on my first backpacking trip when I was 13 years old. Most years, I backpack into the Grand Canyon and now have gone over 30 times! I truly feel that these early experiences at the Grand Canyon shaped and inspired me to become an artist. I am constantly amazed when I’m at the Grand Canyon, not only the sheer size, it’s the play of light and shadow on the canyon walls. The sunrises and sunsets are never quite the same and are a source of many paintings. In recent years, I have packed an oil paint set on my hikes creating on location “plein air” paintings.
The exhibition opens on September 17th, 2023 and runs until January 15, 2024 at the Kolb Studio near the Bright Angel Trailhead on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. I will be featuring a studio piece completed earlier this year and show a collection of plein air oil paintings created during the week of September 9-16, 2023. Artworks can also be viewed and purchased online: https://shop.grandcanyon.org/ during the dates of the show.
Here is my studio piece inspired from one of my backpacking trips. The location is along the Colorado River from the Tonto Trail a couple miles up river from New Hance Rapids. It was a clear Autumn morning and the light filtered through the lower canyon walls to create dramatic light and illuminating the water.
Here is the event schedule, I hope to see you there!
